In recent years, the demand for mental health services has increased unprecedentedly due to challenges faced by COVID-19 and wars across the world. Two vital pillars have emerged and been recognised by people worldwide for support for emotional and psychological difficulties- clinical and counselling psychology.
Both fields entail assisting individuals with counselling and psychotherapy. The difference lies in the age-old focus of each field. Clinical psychology focuses on disturbances in mental health, while counselling psychology is all about providing guidance and advice. Today, the difference between both fields of psychology is more nuanced, and there are more similarities than differences.
Clinical Psychology
Being one of the specialised branches of psychology, clinical psychology focuses on the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of various mental health disorders and severe psychological conditions.
Clinical psychologists with RCI ( Rehabilitation Counsel of India) licences are trained to work with individuals who are dealing with severe challenges such as depression, anxiety, stress, major mental disorders, learning disabilities, substance abuse and other addictions, marital/relationship problems, difficulties coping with personal health problems, and issues stemming from physical, sexual abuse.
Counselling Psychology
Counselling psychology focuses on assisting individuals from different walks of life in managing personal, social, and emotional concerns that are less severe in nature. Counsellors work with clients facing issues like relationship problems, career transitions, grief, stress, anxiety, and the intricacies of everyday life.
Counselling psychology uses various psychological principles to promote growth and well-being for individuals, families, groups and the larger community. The chances of someone working with a counsellor tend to be higher than with a clinical psychologist.
Difference between Counselling and Clinical Psychology
One major distinction between clinical and counselling psychology is the scope of issues that can be addressed.
Clinical psychologists largely engage in more intensive therapeutic interventions, which include both psychotherapy and medication management for individuals with severe mental illnesses. Their role involves addressing acute symptoms, managing crises, and ensuring the safety of their clients.
Counselling psychologists provide support and guidance but generally offer shorter-term counselling to enhance coping skills and facilitate personal growth.
